  1. Prepare for Your Visit To make your visit with a professional go smoothly, be prepared with some information about your lifestyle and hearing situation:

    • Bring a relative or a good friend with you. They can offer another perspective on your hearing and give you a good sounding board for discussing your results after the appointment.

    • List common situations where hearing is difficult for you. This reveals details about your hearing loss and your lifestyle and is very helpful in determining a solution.

    • Think about your top concerns. Are you frustrated in certain situations? Nervous to try hearing instruments? Self-conscious about your hearing? Concerned about costs? Sharing your concerns can help a professional identify the best solution for you.

    • Keep an open mind. You might be surprised at what you learn — and the many possibilities available. This is a step to better hearing — and to a better life. Be prepared to embrace the changes ahead of you so you can enjoy the sounds of everyday life.

i
f any of these sensory parts are damaged, your entire sense of hearing is affected. This may be because a part of your ear becomes blocked. Nerves may get damaged. Sound waves may not be processed correctly. Fortunately, hearing instruments can often step in to assist damaged hearing functions.

How Do We Hear?

Hearing is a magical kind of sense. Unlike sight that requires us to open our eyes and look around, or the sense of touch which relies on physical contact, hearing just “happens.” But how?
It may look unusual, but your ear is a highly specialized piece of equipment on your body. Your cupped outer ear catches sounds waves and directs them into a series of complex sensors. As the sound waves travel through your ear canal, they make your eardrum and tiny bones vibrate. Nerves in your inner ear pick up on these vibrations and turn them into electrical impulses to your brain. Your brain can then identify these sounds as speech, music, noise, and more.

  1. Choose wisely.
You can make active choices about the sound level in your home by choosing low-noise appliances. Refrigerators, air conditioners, etc. may have dB ratings you can compare before you buy.
  2. Stand back and take cover.
You can’t avoid every loud noise. But when you know one is coming, do your part to stay safe. Step back from a source like an amplifier or subway. Cover your hears when walking past construction work. Just cupping your hands over your ears or gently putting your fingers in your ear canals can make a healthy difference to your long-term hearing.

What you can do to protect your hearing:

  1. Turn it down.
Keep your music listening enjoyable—and healthy—by keeping the volume turned below the halfway mar
k, especially if using earphones. Even at this level, it’s wise not to use an MP3 player or other audio device for more than four hours a day.
  2. Play it safe.
If you work around loud noises, make sure you’re wearing proper protection. OSHA requires ear protection in most noisy environments, so use it even if you’re not regularly in the loud areas. Remember to be safe at home, too. Invest in ear protectors when using power tools and lawn equipment.

Protect Your Hearing

Sounds are everywhere, at every level. But love it or hate it, high-volume sound can actually damage your hearing. Here’s what to do and when.
Though your mind registers sounds as ”loud” and ”soft,” sound waves may be more precisely measured in decibels (dB). A whisper is about 30dB while a normal conversation measures 60-65dB. Louder sounds like a subway train or city traffic register around 80-95dB. At this point, you should start to take precautions.
Decibel comparison chart*
Audio player set at 5 of 10 volume94dB
Power tools (drill or power saw)100-110dB
Power lawnmower107dB
Loud rock concert115-150dB
Jet engine at 30 meters (100 feet)140dB
12-gauge shotgun blast165dB
Beyond 90-95dB, sustained exposure to loud sounds may result in hearing loss. Even short exposure to sounds over 125dB can cause permanent damage.

Many people chalk these symptoms up to old age. But in truth, hearing loss occurs in every age group. It’s especially important to catch hearing loss in children since healthy hearing is so essential to language development and learning skills. But adults young and old also need to watch for signs of hearing loss so they can make the most of their quality of life.

So when your hearing declines—and it does for most people at some point—it can feel like much of your life is going downhill. The fact is, hearing loss doesn’t just affect you physically. It can impact your emotional and social health, too.

Left untreated, hearing loss is often related to:

  • Negative attitudes, anger and irritability
  • Stress, fatigue and tension
  • Depression
  • Loneliness
  • Desire to avoid social scenes
  • Unsafe situations due to decreased alertness
  • Lower job performance
  • Trouble remembering things or following directions.

It's time to see your audiologist

When you struggle to hear, you can miss out on a lot of the world around you. You have trouble picking up the words in conversations. Shows and concerts become harder to follow. You might even miss important safety warnings -- like a fire alarm, an emergency vehicle in traffic.

Hearing loss is very common: 36 million adults are affected. About 30% of people over 65 and almost half of those 75 and older have trouble hearing.

If you don't treat a hearing problem, it can lead to more damage in areas of the brain that help you hear. When the nerves don't get signals, they stop working -- like muscles that wither away when you don't use them. That's why it's so important to have the right hearing aid and use it correctly.

For someone living with hearing loss, listening becomes hard work. Instead of putting in the effort, some people avoid parties, dinners, and other social situations. That can lead to feelings of loneliness, isolation, and sadness.

Treatment for Hearing Loss

People with permanent hearing loss need to learn how to function with the hearing they still have. Most people with permanent hearing loss can benefit from using a hearing aid -- yet only one in five eligible people use them. Hearing aids are tiny instruments you typically wear in or behind your ear that make sounds louder. Things do sound different through a hearing aid, so it's important to talk with your doctor to set realistic goals.

Mild hearing loss. One-on-one conversations are fine but it becomes hard to catch every word in the presence of background noise.
Moderate hearing loss. You often need to ask people to repeat themselves during in-person and telephone conversations.
Severe hearing lossFollowing a conversation is almost impossible without a hearing aid.
Profound hearing loss. You cannot hear other people speaking, unless they are extremely loud. Without a hearing aid or cochlear implant you cannot understand speech.

Levels of Hearing Loss

Doctors classify hearing loss by degrees: from mild, moderate, severe, or profound. As the stages progress, the person with hearing loss becomes increasingly cut off from the world of speech and sounds. The symptoms of these categories include:

Other symptoms of hearing loss include:
  • Trouble understanding phone conversations
  • Trouble hearing above background noise
  • Trouble following a conversation when more than one person speaks at once
  • Perception that people are not speaking clearly or mumbling
  • Often misunderstanding what people say and responding inappropriately
  • Often having to ask people to repeat themselves
  • Frequent complaints by others that the TV is too loud
  • Ringing, roaring, or hissing sounds in the ears, known as tinnitus

Symptoms of Hearing Loss

In many cases, hearing fades so slowly, its departure goes unnoticed. You may think that people are mumbling more, your spouse needs to speak up, and the telephone is an inferior communication device. As long as some sound still comes in, you may assume your hearing is fine.
At the early stage of hearing loss, high-pitched sounds, such as children's and female voices, and the sounds "S" and "F" become harder to decipher.

Certain illnesses, such as heart diseasehigh blood pressure, anddiabetes, put ears at risk by interfering with the ears' blood supply. Otosclerosis is a bone disease of the middle ear and Ménière's diseaseaffects the inner ear. Both can cause hearing loss.
Trauma, especially that which involves a skull fracture or punctured eardrum, puts ears at serious risk for hearing loss.
Infection or ear waxcan block ear canals and reduce hearing.

Causes of Hearing Loss continued...

Sudden hearing loss, the rapid loss of 30 decibels or more of hearing ability, can happen over several hours or days. (A normal conversation is 60 decibels.) In nine out of 10 cases, sudden hearing loss affects only one ear. Though there are about 4,000 new cases of sudden hearing loss a year, the cause can only be found in 10% to 15% of cases.

Noise wears down hearing if it's loud or continuous. In some workplaces, ears are exposed to dangerous noise levels every day. To understand the impact of noise, consider this: 44% of carpenters and 48% of plumbers report some hearing loss. Other noisy lines of work include the military, mining, manufacturing, agriculture, and transportation.

Causes of Hearing Loss

Certain conditions, including age, illness, and genetics, may contribute to hearing loss. Over several generations, modern life has added a host of ear-damaging elements to the list, including somemedications and plenty of sources of loud, continuous noise.
Researchers don't fully understand why hearing decreases with age. It could be that lifetime exposure to noise and other damaging factors slowly wear down the ears' delicate mechanics. Genes also play a role.

Hearing Loss

If you take your ears for granted, listen up: hearing loss is the third most common health problem in the U.S. It's also on the rise with nearly 36 million Americans now reporting lost hearing. When hearing goes, it may affect quality of life and relationships.
In this post, looks at the causes, symptoms, and treatment ofhearing loss. If you have lost some of your hearing, you'll find strategies to keep lines of communication open with friends and family. If your hearing is still intact, we could help you keep it that way for years to come.

"Hear and enjoy the sounds of your world"

There is a common misconception that hearing aids have to be ugly or easy-to-notice. Nowadays hearing aids come in a wide variety of styles and configurations, including super stealthy models like the Completely-in-Canal (CIC) or Behind-the-Ear (BTE) configurations, both of which do an excellent job of concealing the receiver so that it is not obvious to onlookers. Alternatively, there are also some quite stylish, yet more noticeable models that incorporate a broad range of colors, shapes, and custom molds for a sleeker appearance.

Nearly invisible

Our hearing aids are the world's smallest. With less than 23 millimeters, they can be

invisibly hidden behind your ear and no one will notice you are wearing them. That is

actually sad, because they even won the red dot design award due to their elegance.

.

Automatic and manual adjustment

Hearing aids need different settings when they are used for watching TV compared to

having a conversation at the dinner table. Your hearing aids can automatically adjust to

these situations as soon as you are in them. If you like to manually adjust your hearing,

you

can save different settings for your favorite places and switch between them.

Best possible understanding

The voice-recognition technology of our hearing aids can only increase the volume of the

person that is talking to you. The background noise is reduced automatically at the same

time. In addition, the directional microphones recognize the direction a voice or sound

comes from and imitates this for you. This allows you to hear what we call "hear in 3D".

Word recognition
  • Word recognition (formerly called speech discrimination) is the ability to repeat correctly an open set of monosyllabic words at suprathreshold intensity. Word lists are phonetically balanced (PB), meaning that the speech sounds used occur with the same frequency as in the whole language.
  • The score represents the percent of words correct for most word recognition tests.
