Personal Sound Amplifiers (PSAPs)These over-the-counter products generally have fewer features and less functionality than hearing aids, and can be a lower-cost solution for people with mild hearing loss. These are designed for people who want to amplify certain sounds—and they aren't subject to the same safety and effectiveness standards that hearing aids are.
Digital Hearing Aids
Digital models have microphones that transmit sound to a computer chip, which moderates the volume and amplifies the frequencies needed to help improve your hearing. They can be programmed to filter out wind and other background noises, and some can sync to your smart phone, enabling you to hear calls through the hearing aid and to use your phone to adjust the hearing aid settings. Some accessories also allow you to stream audio from an MP3 player, laptop, or TV into your hearing aid.
Another technology is the Hearing Loop. It provides a magnetic signal that's picked up by a tiny coiled wire in the hearing aid, which transmits the sound into your ear (available in some sports and concert venues).

If you're experiencing signs of hearing loss, see a board-certified otolaryngologist who will check for impacted earwax and other reversible causes. If none are found, the doctor will probably refer you to an audiologist.

Hearing HelpersOnce hair cells in the inner ear are dead, there's no bringing them back. But hearing aids and other devices can dramatically improve your ability to hear and carry on a normal life. We scanned the marketplace and consulted hearing experts to help you determine which are worth considering.
Causes of Hearing Loss
Most cases of hearing loss in adults stem from damage to the inner ear, where tiny hair cells turn sound vibrations into impulses that nerve cells then carry to the brain. The most common causes of that damage are aging and chronic exposure to loud noises. A family history of severe hearing loss could signal that you're at increased risk. So does being male.
A second, easier-to-treat type of hearing loss originates in the middle or outer ear and stems from reversible problems such as impacted earwax, fluid buildup from an infection, or the use of certain medications. Older adults often have a mix of both types of loss.

Frequency

The frequency of a sound is the number of cycles of a sound wave in one second. The unit of measurement is hertz (Hz).

The frequency of a sound increases as the number of cycles per second increase. Vibrations between 20 and 20,000 cycles per second are interpreted as sound by a healthy individual. A high-pitched sound could be a piccolo flute or a bird singing. Low-pitched sounds could be thunder heard from far away or tones from a bass guitar.

DeciBel (dB)

The term dB (deciBel) and the dB scale is used all over the world for the measurement of sound levels. The deciBel scale is a logarithmic scale where a doubling of sound pressure corresponds to a 3 dB increase in level.

It is very important to realize that the term 'dB' has different meanings and is not a fixed value like the volt or the meter etc. The value of a dB depends on the context in which it is used.

Very often, sound pressure is expressed either in dB SPL, where the weakest sound detected by a normal hearing person is 1000 Hz or in dB HL which corresponds to the normal hearing threshold of a specific sound, (e.g. from 125 Hz to 8000 Hz), 0 dB SPL and 0 dB HL are therefore not the same.
Examples of different sound intensities as expressed in dB(HL):
  • 180 dB: Rocket at take-off
  • 140 dB: Jet engine at take-off
  • 120 dB: Rock band
  • 110 dB: Loud thunder
  • 90 dB: City traffic
  • 80 dB: Loud radio
  • 60 dB: Ordinary conversation
  • 30 dB: Very soft whisper
  • 0 dB: Softest sound a person can hear
Sounds are waves in the air

Sound waves are created when air molecules are set into motion and their energy is transmitted to adjacant air molecules.

When a rock hits water, waves spread in circles. In exactly the same way a sound source creates waves or pressure variations in the air.

These pressure variations are perceived by the ear as sound.

Sounds vary widely in characterstics. Simple sounds such as pure tones contain one frequency component only, while complex sounds such as speech or noise consist of many frequency components. Most of the everyday sounds we hear are complex sounds.

Causes of age-related hearing loss

Presbyacusis / Age-related hearing loss can be hereditary, according to several studies. Environmental factors are also known to cause this condition. For instance, repeated exposure to loud noises is proved to have an impact on Age-related hearing loss / Presbyacusis.

Smokers are also more likely to develop Presbyacusis / age-related hearing loss while certain medical conditions and medications can contribute to the diagnosis.

Your doctor can perform a complete physical exam in order to rule out medical conditions that can cause hearing loss.

Symptoms of age-related hearing loss

Age-related hearing loss is called Presbyacusis. Most people with Age-related hearing loss/Presbyacusis first experience a decline in their ability to hear high frequency sounds.
Speech contains high frequency sounds, so the first signs of Age-related hearing loss / Presbyacusis may be difficulty hearing what people say to you. The speech sounds with the highest frequencies are the consonants, such as s, t, k, p and f.
Another indicator of age-related hearing loss is that men's voices sound clearer than women's voices, while it is generally difficult to hear in noisy environments. Voices can sound mumbled and slurred and you can experience a ringing in your ears, headaches, vision changes and dizziness. If you experience one or more of these symptoms, you should contact your doctor. They can tell you about the different forms of treatment for age-related hearing loss.
Age-related hearing loss - Presbyacusis

As we get older we loose our hearing. Some people get an age-related hearing loss earlier than others. Age-related hearing loss is also called Presbyacusis.

Age-related hearing loss - Presbyacusis
Statistically we all begin to lose our hearing when we are in our 30s and 40s. One adult in five and more than half of all people over the age of 80 suffer from hearing loss. However, more than half of the hearing impaired population are of working age.

Hearing Loss is Often related to...............

Left untreated, hearing loss is often related to:

  • Negative attitudes, anger and irritability
  • Stress, fatigue and tension
  • Depression
  • Loneliness
  • Desire to avoid social scenes
  • Unsafe situations due to decreased alertness
  • Lower job performance
  • Trouble remembering things or following directions
Many people chalk these symptoms up to old age. But in truth, hearing loss occurs in every age group. It’s especially important to catch hearing loss in children since healthy hearing is so essential to language development and learning skills. But adults young and old also need to watch for signs of hearing loss so they can make the most of their quality of life.

Why Hearing is Important

You know hearing is important. Healthy hearing allows us to communicate. To socialize with friends. To alert us of trouble and work more effectively. Healthy hearing even helps us relax.
So when your hearing declines—and it does for most people at some point—it can feel like much of your life is going downhill. The fact is, hearing loss doesn’t just affect you physically. It can impact your emotional and social health, too.

Speech test

Next, the hearing care professional will test your ability to understand speech. The speech test investigates whether there could be problems with the auditory nerve which sends signals from the ear to the brain or whether there could be problems understanding speech and sounds in the brain itself.

Tympanometry

The last examination is Tympanometry. Tympanometry tests the condition of the middle ear and the mobility of the eardrum.

Audiogram

The results of these tests are presented in an audiogram, which will show the degree of your hearing loss and if you could benefit from hearing aids.

Initial examination

The hearing care professional will start examine your ears with a special instrument called an otoscope. With this examination the hearing care professional can find out if there are any problems in the ear canal or with the eardrum.
After the physical examination, your hearing is tested. This takes place in a quiet room without background noise or in a special soundproof room.

Pure tone test

The first test is a pure tone test. This tests your ability to hear a number of different pure tones using a pair of soundproof headphones.

Bone conduction test

In some cases, the hearing care professional will carry out a bone conduction test to measure your ability to hear pure tones, by placing a small bone conductor behind your ear. The bone conduction test will reveal if there is a problem in the middle ear cavity.
Typical procedure for a hearing test

How to take a hearing test? A hearing test often comprises of a number of different examinations which, when taken together, can determine whether or not a person is suffering from hearing loss and to what extent.

The hearing care professional will normally start by asking you some questions relating to your hearing, such as how you experience your hearing, if you have been subjected to loud noise or other incidents, if people in your family suffer from hearing loss or whether you hear better in one ear or the other.

"Such treatments are attempts at therapy. To the extent that some people may be helped, that is good, but there is no scientific basis for them," says the Tinnitus-Care-Centrum in Tübingen, Germany.

The treatment of tinnitus varies from country to country. In Germany, some doctors recommend that people with tinnitus receive medical treatment which may be combined with subsequent relaxation and therapy-sessions. The treatment may relieve the sense of irritation from the sound in the ear or make it easier to live with it.

The feeling of helplessness makes those suffering from tinnitus look for any kind of relief and vulnerable to often highly questionable and unsubstantiated claims about new treatment methods or even cures. While specialist knowledge about tinnitus is increasing, many aspects remain unclear. And many types of cures are offered without scientific documentation. The list of purported effective tinnitus treatments, whether on TV, on the internet or in the press, is growing longer.

"There is no shortage of claims and promises," says Thomas Lübbert from the local tinnitus support group, "Freizeichen" in Freiburg, Germany.

Psychology plays a major part in tinnitus, and tinnitus sufferers may actually benefit from many of the tinnitus related offers, especially if they include relaxation and counseling.
Can tinnitus be cured?

Many ask can tinnitus be cured? How to stop ears ringing? Is there a tinnitus remedy?

Can tinnitus be cured?
Ringing, hissing, buzzing, roaring - tinnitus can take many forms. The bothersome and uncomfortable noise in your ear varies from one tinnitus sufferer to another. So does the impact of tinnitus on people's lives. Some get used to the never-ending noise in the ear with relative ease, while others are driven to despair. Many ask can tinnitus be cured? How to stop ringing ears? Is there a tinnitus remedy?

  • Fitting is an ongoing process. When you become more familiar with your hearing aid, you can tell the supplier that a certain sound seems as if it is too close to you. The dispenser may then focus the hearing aids more accurately, making them work better.
  • Wearing hearing aids for the first time is also a psychological process. It is a good idea to talk to the staff at the hearing clinic about your expectations and your experience.
  • Set a personal objective and a plan of action: What you have to be aware of and the different expectations in certain periods, etc. This will be of great help to you while you get used to your hearing aids - both physically and mentally.
  • Talk to other people who suffer from hearing problems and who use hearing aids. They will most likely have a lot of experience for you to draw on.

Generally, the sounds are quite different when compared to normal hearing.

Below is some good advice for first-time users of hearing aids
  • You cannot compare hearing aids with spectacles. When you use glasses for the first time, you see the difference right away, but with hearing aids you have to get used to hearing differently.
  • It is a good idea to practise being a good hearing aid user. This means that you must keep wearing your hearing aid - do not put it away if it irritates you. You need to have a good and ongoing dialogue with your audiologist and supplier. The more you tell them about your experience using hearing aids, the better they can be fitted.
Getting used to hearing aids

The first use of a hearing aid can be somewhat shocking for many people.

Getting used to hearing aids
Most hearing-impaired people wait far too long before getting hearing aids and they have often forgotten what it is like to have normal hearing.

This is why voices and traffic noises may seem very loud when using a hearing aid for the first time.
